Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation · APEC Business Advisory Council
APEC is the premier and most influential economic cooperation mechanism in the Asia-Pacific. It was formally established at the first Ministerial Meeting in Canberra in November 1989, convened by Australia, the United States, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Canada and the six ASEAN members of the time.
APEC works to support sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific, safeguard free and open trade and investment, accelerate regional economic integration, encourage economic and technical cooperation, and foster a sound and sustainable business environment.
APEC has 21 member economies and three observers — the ASEAN Secretariat, the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
Established as a permanent APEC body in 1995, ABAC advises APEC Economic Leaders on business priorities and delivers an annual report of recommendations, presented directly to Leaders since 1996.
Each Leader appoints three business representatives — from large, small and medium-sized enterprises — making 63 members in total, chaired by the host economy’s representative. Many ABAC recommendations have been adopted by Leaders and ministers, a mark of the weight given to the voice of business.
